Dear all,

A group in Auckland are reviewing diabetes self-management education provision across the region and in particular looking at updating the most commonly used curriculum and making this available to PHO providers across the region. The other areas being reviewed are:

  • Identifying a set of minimum standards for DSME
  • Validated or suitable provider audit tools and
  • Participant evaluation tools for pre, post and 6-12 month follow up. (There is a range of tools being used including HeiQ, Diabetes Attitude Questionnaire, Stanford and self-developed tools. etc. )

Ideally most of this work should be done nationally as these are key questions for developing a quality DSME service, so we are most happy to share our findings with other groups that are interested.

Questions for the LTC Network:

  1. In terms of DSME curriculum, do you know of any well developed DSME curriculums you can share?
  2. DSME Standards - we are reviewing
    1. the USA National DSME Standards, http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/35/Supplement_1/S101.full....  and the
    2. UK QISMET DSME Standards http://qismet.org.uk/projects/diabetes-standard/
    3. AADE – American Association of Diabetes Educators
    4. Any others? Any NZ or Australian ones??
    5. Validated Evaluation tools for DSME – what are you using in your organisation or others you know of? What’s working, what’s not??
    6. Any other comments or suggestions?

Thanks everyone!

We look forward to your comments and suggestions.

Hi Janine,

Currently we are working on Northern regional Best Practice Manual. Yes we indeed need national level approach and sharing what is being done at different provider's level and regions.

Would any one like to share their ideas / curriculum/best practice and any other suggestions?

Would anyone like to share your vision of DSME service ( what is good, what can be excluded or included etc.) ?

Good morning.
